چکیده

[1] This paper deals with volume changes of an unsaturated soil in the elastic domain. Two constitutive relations are established in the general framework of unsaturated porous media mechanics. They express the variations of the void ratio e and the water content w with respect to the mean net stress (s pg *) and the suction s. Associated with validated experimental results, these relations give access to the construction of the state surface e = f((s pg *), s) in the elastic domain. This surface shows two domains: the first, near saturation, is based on the hypothesis of a Biot’s coefficient bw equal to 1; the second, for high suctions, is based on an experimental value of bw. Next, a preliminary construction of the state surface Gsw = g((s pg *), s) is proposed for a given soil. Although restricted to the elastic domain, these constructions give a new understanding of the suction role in important problems related to overconsolidation, shrinkage, or swelling of unsaturated soils.

Selection of Intermodal Conductivity Averaging Scheme for Unsaturated Flow in Homogeneous Media

The nonlinear solvers in numerical solution of water flow in variably saturated soils are prone to convergence difficulties. Many aspects can give rise to such difficulties, like very dry initial conditions, a steep pressure gradient and great variation of hydraulic conductivity occur across the wetting front during the infiltration of water.  So, the averaging method applied to compute hydraul...

Estimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils

In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...

تخمین منحنی مشخصه رطوبتی و هدایت هیدرولیکی غیراشباع خاک در تراکم‌های

Hydraulic conductivity is an important parameter in the design of geotechnical structures such as earth dam, floor construction, retaining walls and environmental structures. In unsaturated soils, hydraulic conductivity is a function of moisture content and soil water suction i.e. soil moisture characteristic curve. In this study, the values of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity in two soil typ...

Least squares weighted residual method for finding the elastic stress fields in rectangular plates under uniaxial parabolically distributed edge loads

In this work, the least squares weighted residual method is used to solve the two-dimensional (2D) elasticity problem of a rectangular plate of in-plane dimensions 2a 2b subjected to parabolic edge tensile loads applied at the two edges x = a. The problem is expressed using Beltrami–Michell stress formulation. Airy’s stress function method is applied to the stress compatibility equation, and th...

Numerical Solution for Heave of Expansive Soils

A numerical solution for heave prediction is developed within the context theories for both saturated and unsaturated soil behaviors. Basically, lowering the potential level of compressing on a saturated layer will cause heaving due to water absorption. This water absorption is in an opposite way, similar to water dissipation as what happens during unloading in consolidation process. However, i...
